Since it is very brittle, it is usually purchased as a powder instead of bars or coins (though some coins and bars are available). Rhodium has similar applications but is much more expensive than ruthenium, which is therefore usually used in preference. Ruthenium is used to harden platinum and palladium alloys to make highly resistant electrical contacts. Palladium is also an exchange traded metal (along with platinum, gold and silver) Ruthenium and Rhodiumīoth ruthenium and rhodium are by-products of other PGMs and copper-nickel ores, with tiny production figures. Iridium anomalies have since been identified in a number of meteor impact sites. As iridium is rare on earth, but much more abundant elsewhere in the universe, the wide-spread, iridium-rich clay is evidence of the pulverisation of something very large of extra-terrestrial origin. The Alvarez Hypothesis proposed that a thin layer of iridium-rich clay represented the impact of a colossal meteorite, which radically changed the climate and ended the era of the dinosaurs. The cause of the dinosaur extinction has long intrigued scientists. Iridium helped answer one of geology’s biggest puzzles – what happened to the dinosaurs? The rapid destruction of the dinosaurs occurred around 65 million years ago and marked the end of the Cretaceous era. Important deposits of iridium are located in the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Myanmar and Australia. Like the other PGMs, it is typically mined as a byproduct of nickel and copper production. Iridium is found associated with osmium as the alloy “iridosmium” (or “osmiridium” if osmium dominates). Additionally, osmium plays a role in geochronology–dating rocks. It is also an important oxidant for industrial applications. Today it is used in both electrical and optical microscopy. Previous industrial uses for osmium have included fountain-pen nibs and record player needles. Like iridium, it’s recovered as a by-product from copper-nickel mines. Dual x-ray absorptiometry testing of bone mineral density can be used to assess cumulative calcium status over the lifetime because the skeleton stores almost all calcium in the body. The normal range of ionized calcium in healthy people is 4.6 to 5.3 mg/dL (1.15 to 1.33 mmol/L). Levels of ionized (or free) calcium, the biologically active form, in serum are also used to measure calcium status. However, serum levels do not reflect nutritional status because of their tight homeostatic control. Total calcium levels can be measured in serum or plasma serum levels are typically 8.8 to 10.4 mg/dL (2.2 to 2.6 mmol/L) in healthy people. ![]() Net absorption of dietary calcium is as high as 60% in infants and young children, who need substantial amounts to build bone, but it decreases to about 25% in adulthood and continues to decline with age. Age can also affect absorption of dietary calcium. Absorption of calcium from food is about 45% at intakes of 200 mg/day but only 15% when intakes are higher than 2,000 mg/day. Īn inverse relationship exists between calcium intake and absorption. These levels remain constant in men, but they start to drop in women as a result of increases in bone remodeling due to decreased estrogen production at the start of menopause. This amount rises quickly after birth, reaching about 1,200 g in women and 1,400 g in men by adulthood. Īt birth, the body contains about 26 to 30 g calcium. Bone remodeling is required to change bone size during growth, repair damage, maintain serum calcium levels, and provide a source of other minerals. Unlike teeth, bone undergoes continuous remodeling, with constant resorption and deposition of calcium into new bone. More than 99% of calcium in the body is in the form of calcium hydroxyapatite, an inorganic matrix of calcium and phosphate that is stored in the bones and teeth. Īlmost all (98%) calcium in the body is stored in the bones, and the body uses the bones as a reservoir for, and source of, calcium to maintain calcium homeostasis. Vitamin D is required for calcium to be absorbed in the gut by active transport and to maintain adequate calcium levels in blood. Active transport is responsible for most absorption when calcium intakes are lower, and passive diffusion accounts for an increasing proportion of calcium absorption as intakes rise. Ĭalcium from foods and dietary supplements is absorbed by both active transport and by passive diffusion across the intestinal mucosa. The small ionized pool of calcium in the circulatory system, extracellular fluid, and various tissues mediates blood vessel contraction and dilation, muscle function, blood clotting, nerve transmission, and hormonal secretion. IntroductionĬalcium, the most abundant mineral in the body, is found in some foods, added to others, present in some medicines (such as antacids), and available as a dietary supplement.Ĭalcium makes up much of the structure of bones and teeth and allows normal bodily movement by keeping tissue rigid, strong, and flexible. It is not even obvious how to calculate the beam direction in that case, where Fresnel equations predict complex angles. Note that you have constant optical intensity along the interface, but not over the cross-section of the transmitted beam in the absorbing medium, if it has some angle against normal direction. Fresnel equations do work, but you need to be more careful calculating the transmitted intensity or power from those. My question would be: why do Fresnel equations not work properly here? Given a 'p' polarization and a non-zero incidence angle, computing the transmittivity (), I get a value of transmittance () which is different from the same transmittance computed as. I wrote a simple Matlab code to compute the reflectances and transmittances of an air – lossy dielectric (with complex refractive index) interface using the Fresnel equations. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. See also: Fresnel reflections, reflectivity, transmissivity, refraction, total internal reflection, Brewster's angle, refractive index There are also other methods for making optical contacts. For example, the optical quality is generally excellent when optical contact bonding is applied. However, very high optical quality can be achieved with careful surface preparation. For example, surface irregularities even only on a sub-micrometer scale may lead to substantial irregular wavefront distortions. In practice, Fresnel equations may not completely describe the optical properties of an interface since the surface quality is not high enough. The problem is related to the fact that the optical intensity is no longer constant along the wavefronts. The above-mentioned correction factor for taking into account the different propagation angles will be complex, but the power transmission factor would of course have to be a real number. As you can see there is a complementary color scheme at work here, blue and deep orange/brown. Most will recognize this shot from the intro of the film. As Dice said in an interview, “One of the things Ralph (the original Toy Story art director) said was to pick ten or fifteen key moments and see if you can describe the color flow of the movie with just those images”. So, though I will mostly reference Dice Tsutsumi and Kim White in this post the results you see are made possible by the countless artists making up the Toy Story 3 team. The tragedy, most of the artists go unnoticed. Animation is the ultimate collaborative medium. The director of photography for Toy Story 3 was Kim White and she and her team were responsible for bringing Dice’s paintings to life. The actual images you will see here comes from the final film. I believe Toy Story 3 is the best example I have ever seen of the emotional impact color and lighting has on a film. The color script is started towards the very beginning of pre-production and isn’t finished until lighting for the movie is finalized. Dice Tsutsumi said, “The color script sets the tone of the film: how color and atmosphere and lighting will carry the story and the characters throughout the film”. ![]() He was in charge of creating the color script for the movie, which consists of dozens of impressionistic paintings plotting out the general emotional arc of the movie through the use of color and lighting (check out part of his color script here). With Toy Story 3 the brilliant art director Dice Tsutsumi took the helms of this beloved franchise and gave us a pallet of colors unmatched in animation. The goal isn’t to be subtle with the colors, but rather use color to drive the emotional arc of the movie. Instead, each scene usually consists of one to three key colors to establish an atmosphere. The colors are usually extremely saturated and there are few scenes where you see the whole gambit of the color wheel. Toy Story has had a distinct pallet from the beginning. Let’s talk about the color pallet used to tell the story of Toy Story 3. From the refined Pixar storytelling skills to the huge advancements in technology Toy Story 3 was able to expand its universe while keeping a firm grasp on what made the first two films so loved by the first generation of Toy Story fans. Simply put, Pixar was running on all cylinders when they made this film. ![]() And, though you could make an argument Toy Story 3 is a little repetitive and less original then the first two movies, I think the film stands out as the most visually bold film of the trilogy.
